Can you "speak" like an elephant?

Elephants make many different kinds of sounds to communicate with other elephants. Listen to each elephant sound and try to guess what kind of elephant sound it is.

Chirp

Only Asian elephants make chirps and squeaks. They have different meanings. They may be used to share news, share needs, bring the herd together or show support.

Roar

Roars can have different meanings. They can be used to show distress (fear, anger) or extreme happiness. This roar might sound scary, but it was a happy roar when two elephants saw each other again.

Squeak

Only Asian elephants make chirps and squeaks. They have different meanings. They may be used to share news, share needs, bring the herd together or show support.

Trumpet

Elephants trumpet when they are excited. Most elephant sounds are made with their voices. Trumpets are different. Elephants trumpet by blowing air through their trunk. Trumpets can mean an elephant is lost, angry, playful, or surprised.

Rumble

Rumbles are low sounds. They can be used when greeting, bonding, threatening, soothing, or giving comfort. This rumble was recorded in the forest between two female friends. Listen closely. You'll hear buzzing insects and a quiet purr-like rumble.

C. Cell Phone Challenge

Elephants make lots of different sounds. But how do those sounds travel? Let’s see what you can learn about sound by taking the cell phone challenge. 

 

In your Mission Log complete the “cell phone challenge” you may do this on your own, with a group or as a whole class. You are going to answer three questions: 

  1. Can we see sound? 
  2. Can sound make things move? 
  3. How does sound travel?
