2.3 Showing Empathy –

A. Elephant Empathy

Video courtesy of The Bushcamp Company

Having empathy means thinking about how others feel. Watch this video of a baby elephant and its mother.

  • How is the baby acting?
  • Why might they be acting that way?
Watch on your own or discuss with a partner.

B. Elephant Emotions

Empathy is thinking about how others feel and acting with support. We can’t know how elephants feel, but we can see how they act. Here are three examples of when elephants might act with empathy.

Directions: Look at each picture.

  1. Which of these do pictures MIGHT be examples of elephants showing empathy?
  2. Can you think of a short story or explanation for each picture?
There is no right answer. Be creative. You can write your answers or discuss with a partner.

C. Think About It

Directions: Think about a time when you felt empathy. Pick one question below and tell a short story (3-5 sentences) about your experience.

  1. When is a time that someone has shown you empathy?
  2. When is a time that you showed empathy to someone else?
  3. When was a time when it was hard for you to show empathy?

Write your answers in your mission log
