A. What's a Mosaic

Now you are going to make mosaic art to show why living in groups is helpful for elephants. Art is a great way to teach people. It makes us stop and pay attention. You may decide to use your elephant mosaic in your take action project. Maybe you’ll even send your mosaic to Congress.

  1. First, what is a mosaic. Look at the picture below. Is it painted? Is it a drawing? Is it made of something else? What does it look like?
  2. Then zoom in on the picture to look closer. Just move the slider.

B. Ancient Art

Did you notice that a mosaic is art that is made up of lots of tiny pieces glued together? You can use tiles, glass, paper, beans or any small pieces to make a mosaic. This is a mosaic from a cave in the country of Turkey. It’s over 1,500 years old.

Directions: Can you find:

  1. Three things these images or pictures have in common?
  2. Three things that make these images different?

Fun Fact: Elephants live in groups and mosaics are artwork made of groups of tiny pieces.
