One way scientists study animals is through observation. 

Think About It: 

  1. Look at the two pictures of elephants below. Do you think they are the same species or different species? Why or why not?

Species: Asian Elephant

There are three different species of elephant. The Asian elephant is one of the three kinds of elephants.

It has smaller ears. It’s not as hot in Asia, so the Asian elephant doesn’t need larger ears to help keep it cool. Who has larger ears? Check out the other image to learn more.

Species: African Savanna Elephant

There are three different species of elephant. The African Savanna elephant is one of the three kinds of elephants.

Its large ears help keep it cool. Warm blood flows to the ears and the heat leaves the elephant's body through its ears.
