3.2 Our Brain, Our Senses

A. Sense It

Get ready to jump into hyperspace. Video games engage our senses. They make us think and feel. Sometimes video games can feel even more exciting than real life.

Directions: Watch this short video of the start of a video game. Which of your senses do you use as you watch this sample from a video game?

B. Into Our Brains

You probably said that video games use sight and sound. If you did, you were correct. But how does our body process that light and sound? How do we actually play video games? It’s all in our brains.

Directions: Complete the slideshow below to answer this question:

  1. How does information get from the video game to our brain?

C. Sound Studio

Video game designers think very carefully about what sounds to use in games. Why? Because each sound sends a signal to our brain. Some sounds tell us we are doing well, and we should keep going. Other sounds serve as warnings that we should stop or that we have failed. Other sounds tell us to be alert- something good or bad is about to happen. Now it’s time for you to be a game designer and think about what types of sounds you would use.

Directions: Pretend you are designing a new game. You need to pick two sounds for the game. In your Mission Log

  1. Describe how each sound makes you feel and what signal that sound sends to your brain.
  2. Then decide which sound is the best sound to tell kids they are winning the game, and which sound is the best sound to tell kids they lost the game. Explain your answer.
