3.10 Pixels and Patterns

A. Seeing Games!

Some video games can take years to make. Game designers spend hours designing their games. We know sound designers design the sounds, but graphic designers make the visuals. But how do those amazing images go from a secret code with 1s and 0s to amazing images that make us LOVE gaming? Let’s find out.

Directions: First, start by putting the pictures of the video game in the correct order. Which do you think is oldest, which is newest? Why? You’ll check your answer when you read the zine.

B. Zooming In

Now let’s zoom in.

Directions: Take a look at the picture of the video game below. Use the slider to zoom in.

  1. How does the picture change each time you zoom in?
  2. What do you see when you zoom in all the way? What do you think that might be?

C. Read

Fact Finder: Now we’re going to read more about how we use patterns to store and send information. As you read, write down any important information in the “Fact Finder” section of your mission log.

How do we use patterns to send and store information from video games?

D. Pixel Play

Video game designers create sounds and visuals. They use patterns to store that information and to program the game. Now it’s your turn to use patterns to send an image to a friend.

Directions: Follow the directions in your Mission Log. Create a pattern with pixels and then create a code to share that pattern with a partner. See if they can create your pattern without seeing it using only the code in your directions.
