3.11 Meet a Game Designer

A. Meet Professor Grace

We’ve learned about the science of games, how our brain processes information, and how light in games travels from the game to our eyes. It’s time to meet a game designer.

We’re going to meet Professor Lindsay Grace. He’s a game designer and professor at the University of Miami in Florida. He’s been designing games since he was a kid. Professor Grace will tell us more about how video games are designed and why designers create games the way they do.

Can you find Florida?

C. Game Design Studio

Professor Grace taught us about three main parts of a video game:

  • Goal: Something we want to accomplish.
  • Obstacle: Something we have to overcome or solve to win.
  • Means: The tools we need to achieve our goal.

Directions: Pretend you are designing a video game. Which type of game would you design? Drag and drop the different options to see what other kinds of games you can create. Try arranging different goals, obstacles, and means to see which combination creates your favorite idea for a new game. Which ideas did you like most?
