3.15 Debate! –

A. What are the Rules?

Debates are a great way to share different perspectives with one another. Even when we disagree, we can disagree respectfully. Agreeing on the steps and rules of the debate ahead of time will help the debate run smoothly. Take a look at the example rules. Then, decide on the steps and rules you will follow with your class or your conversation partner.

Example Steps:

  • Person 1 delivers case
  • Person 2 delivers opposing case
  • Person 1 delivers rebuttal
  • Person 2 delivers rebuttal

Example Rules:

  • Actively listen to the speaker
  • Only speak when it is your turn
  • Keep an open mind

B. Debate

It's Time to Debate!

Once you have agreed on the steps and rules you will follow, it’s time for your debate. Find a partner or a group you can debate your argument with. If you are working by yourself find a time to share your ideas with a friend or family member.

C. Mission Log

Now that you have had a chance to debate, take some time to think about how it went. With a partner, or in your Mission Log, answer the following:

  • How well did you present your case?
  • Name all of the different perspectives you heard.
  • Did any of the other perspectives surprise you or make you change how you think about the problem?
