Connections to Other Resources

This zine is the primary text in the Trash to Treasure project. Kids are introduced to the importance of recycling. They learn about the impact our trash has on our environment, the oceans and living things. They then learn about how we can repurpose trash by recycling and that this process usually requires us to change the state of an object through a heating and cooling process. Lastly, students learn about who is helping and how they can help. Students then use what they have read to create a brochure about recycling and acting as a recycling center tour guide presenting on why recycling is important, how recycling works and what is the proper way we can recycle.

  • K-ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems: Things that people do to live comfortably can affect theworld around them. But they can make choices that reduce their impacts on the land, water, air, and other living thing.
  • 2-PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter 
    • Different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on temperature.
    • Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties. 
    • Different properties are suited to different purposes. 
    • A great variety of objects can be built up from a small set of pieces. 
  • 2- PS1.B: Chemical Reactions: Heating or cooling a substance may cause changes that can be observed. Sometimes these changes are reversible, and sometimes they are not.
