3.9 Measuring the Python’s Impact –

A. The Everglades Before and After the Python

Larry grew up near the Everglades and saw what it was like before the Burmese python invaded. Listen to Larry share how the Everglades have changed.

B. Sizing Up the Python’s Impact

Invasive species can have a negative impact on the environment, the economy and human health. We are going to do a study to see how the animals in the Florida Everglades have been impacted by the Burmese python.

Directions: Find the 3.9 graph the impact page in your Mission Log. Use the clues below to make a bar graph showing how much pythons have eaten.

Bar graphs are one way to SHOW people impact. The bars on the graph measure impact. The bars make it easier to SEE how big or small an impact is. Our bar graph shows how much pythons have eaten.

C. Make an Origami Native Species

Create an Origami Model Species
Another way to show impact is through models! You are going to make an origami species from the Everglades to SHOW people what animals are impacted by pythons. Your model will catch their attention so they stop and read more. Follow the directions in your Mission Log.

Create an Origami Model Species
To make your model species:

  • Choose which native species you will create an origami model of. You can use an example from the Mission Log or research your own.
  • Create your origami model.
  • Use the display mat in your Mission Log to describe the effects the Burmese python has had on your native species.
  • If you want to make more than one, set up your models as a mini-museum. Display your mini-museum somewhere others easily see it and learn about your native species.
