What do deadly diseases, millions of lost dollars and destroyed ecosystems have in common? If you guessed invasive species, you are correct!

 

By now, you know that invasive species can cause a lot of harm to ecosystems. But, did you know that they can cause other harmful impacts?

Invasive species can do harm to the environment by damaging the land and harming native species

Invasive species can cost the government, organizations, businesses and individual people a lot of money.

Fact Finder: Now we’ll read more about other examples of invasive species. As you read, write down any important information in the “Fact Finder” section of your Mission Log.

D. Ecosystem vs. Invader!

Play Ecosystem vs. Invader
Now, it’s time to play a card game called, “Ecosystem vs. Invader.” This card game will help you learn about how different invasive species can move into new homes. The invader and ecosystem cards can also give you ideas for the characters and setting of your comic book. Follow the directions in your Mission Log. As you play, think about: 

  1. Do you see any patterns? 
  2. Who wins more often? Why?

Now, it’s time to play a card game called, “Ecosystem vs. Invader.” This card game will help you learn about how different invasive species can move into new homes. The invader and ecosystem cards can also give you ideas for the characters and setting of your comic book. To play the card game:

  • Gather your materials. All of the cards needed for the game are in the Mission Log.
  • Use the directions in the Mission Log to play the game.

  • Did you notice any patterns with who won each of the turns?
  • What do the results of the cards game make you think about invasive species and new habitats?
