Summary

The “Sleep Inventions” zine helps kids explore the following topics.

  • Why do we need sleep?
  • Day and Night
  • Struggles with Sleep
  • Who is helping?
  • How can we help?

Connections to Other Resources

This zine is the primary text in the Sleep Inventions project. Kids learn about sleep, how it impacts our bodies and why sleep is important. Kids then explore the science of sleep including our circadian rhythm, the impact of sunlight on our sleep patterns, the earth’s rotation of the sun and the patterns of the sun, moon and stars.  Kids make the connection that sleep is connected to time and sunlight. They then learn about why people struggle with sleep, what inventions have helped people sleep, who is helping and how we can help.  Students take action by using the engineering design process to create an invention/innovation to help people sleep.
