4.2 Strategy 1: The Ask –

A. Letter Writing Strategy 1: The Ask

The first strategy we are going to learn about is called “The Ask.” When you write a letter you ASK your representative to do something. You want them to take action- we call that action “The ASK.” You ASK has to be clear, of your representative won’t know what to do.

B. Which "Ask" is Better?

Usually, we put “the Ask” in the first paragraph. That way your representative knows why you are writing.

Directions: Here’s the opening of two letters written by kids.

  1. Which letter do you think has a better ask? Why? Discuss your answer with a partner or think about it on your own.
  2. Click each letter see what Mr. Vargas thinks.

Letter from Phi

Penguins are one of the world's most amazing animals and their homes are disappearing. Climate change is melting their icy homes. Congress must pass the pollution control law to help protect our climate. Vote yes for pollution control.

Letter from Penn

Penguins are one of the cutest animals. They are dying and their homes are melting. They live in many cold parts of the world. Congress must help them today.

C. Sample Letter

Now, here’s the rest of the letter. Your letter to Congress will sound different, but it should follow a similar outline. It should have an introduction, evidence and a conclusion. The letter below is out of order. The paragraphs are in the wrong places. 🙂

Directions:

  1. Put the paragraphs in the order you think makes the most sense.
  2. When you have them in the correct order, think about: What makes this a good letter? What would you do to make it better?
