Virtual Field Trip: Meet A Storm Chaser

Summary:

Join storm chaser Jennifer Walton as she tracks down wild weather such as lightning storms and tornadoes! Jennifer will teach students about what storm chasers do and share the experience of chasing down her very first tornado! She’ll also teach students about the tools storm chasers use to conduct their work.

Activity

Students will create a natural disaster map. Their maps will illustrate where they live, labeling important landforms and bodies of water. Students will include an explanation of which features exist in their area, and how these features make certain natural disasters more or less likely to occur.

Connections to Other Resources

This virtual field trip is used in the Wild Weather full project.

Overview & Materials

Subject: Science, ELA

Grade: 3-5

Topic: Extreme weather and natural disasters, maps

Materials Needed:

  • Local map
  • Poster board
  • Markers or coloring tools

Aligned Standards

Common Core Reading (CCSS):

  • Informational/Nonfiction Standards R.I. 1-10 for grades 3-5.
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):

Performance Expectations (PE):

  • 4-ESS2-2. Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features.

Science and Engineering Practices (SEP):

  • Make observations and/or measurements to produce data.
  • Analyze and interpret data

Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI):

  • ESS2.B: The locations of mountain ranges, deep ocean trenches, ocean floor structures, earthquakes, and volcanoes occur in patterns. Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur in bands that are often along the boundaries between continents and oceans. Major mountain chains form inside continents or near their edges. Maps can help locate the different land and water features areas of Earth.
  • ESS3.B: A variety of hazards result from natural processes (e.g., earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions). Humans cannot eliminate the hazards but can take steps to reduce their impacts. (Note: This Disciplinary Core Idea can also be found in 3.WC.)

Crosscutting Concepts (CC):

  • Cause and effect
  • Patterns
