4-4: Letters to the Future

A. Why Include a Letter?

Look at the picture of artifacts from a time capsule. What message do you think the creator of this time capsule was trying to send? How might a letter help you better understand their message?

Often, people who make time capsules include a letter or other form of written communication. Watch the video of Chelsea to learn about why people choose to include letters and what information should be included in the letter you write for your time capsule. 

B. Parts of a Letter

Letter writing usually takes a specific format so that it is clear who you are writing to and includes all of the components that Chelsea named as important to include in a letter.  Take a look at the diagram below to learn the different parts of a letter. 

C. Tips for Letter Writing

Directions: Chelsea highlighted some important information that should be included in the letter for your time capsule. Drag the information she suggested to include in your letter to the correct place.  Then read through the letter.  What message do you think this person is sending to people in the future? What would you edit to help make it better? 

D. Letter Analysis

Directions: Use the tips from Chelsea to determine which letter in your Mission Log would be best to include in a time capsule.
