4-3: Selecting Artifacts

A. What are Artifacts?

The objects that are placed inside a time capsule are called artifacts. Artifacts are objects that are either made or changed by humans. Watches, books, and painted rocks are examples of artifacts.

Directions: Click the white arrows to see examples of artifacts Chelsea has found in time capsules. As you look at the artifacts, think about the following questions:

  • Why do you think the time capsule creators decided to include these artifacts?
  • What might people learn by observing these artifacts?

B. Selecting Artifacts for a Time Capsule

There are several things to consider when selecting an artifact for your time capsule. Watch the video to hear Chelsea discuss some of these considerations.

C. Don't Use Me!

The artifacts in a time capsule should match the message. They should also be made of materials that will last. Chelsea mentioned several objects and artifacts that would not last in a time capsule. She explained that their physical properties could cause them to decompose before someone else opens the time capsule.

D. Putting It Together

You have now learned about both creating a clear message and collecting aligned artifacts.

Directions: Below you will find many different artifacts.  Try these steps below.

1. Move one of the messages and move all of the artifacts that fit that message into the capsule. Do you think someone from the future would guess that message?  What else might you add or replace to make that message clearer?  Try all the different messages.

2. Create your own combination. Put yourself in the shoes of Leo from the future. What message do you think he would think you were sending?

3.  What types of artifacts is this making you think you may want to put into your capsule?Â
