3.15 Debate it Out

A. Debate Prep

It’s time to debate. Gorillas need our help, but the solutions aren’t easy. Can we really stop using cellphones? Can we stop mining? What happens to the miners?

Now, you will debate the question: Should people be allowed to mine the Earth’s resources if it harms the environment?

Now it’s time to prepare for your debate. In a debate, you make an argument. To start, follow these steps:

  1. Think about your own opinion. Should people be allowed to mine the earth’s resources if it hurts the environment?
  2. Write your answer.
  3. Pick three arguments or reasons to support your answer. These are your evidence.
  4. Then think of what someone might say when they disagree with you. What are their arguments? This is called a counterargument.
Pro Tip: Use your Empathy Challenge table and comic strip to give you ideas for your debate.

B. Debate it Out!

Once you are done planning your arguments, it’s time for your debate. Find a partner or a group with whom you can discuss. If you are working by yourself, find a time to share your ideas with a friend or family member.
