3.11 Empathy Challenge

A. Two Sides of the Coin

We can’t get rid of all our cellphones and electronic devices, but we also have to find a way to help gorillas.

Directions: To help get ready for your take action project, create a “Two Sides of the Story” chart in your mission log. On one side, write all the ways we benefit from our electronic devices. On the other side, write all the ways gorillas are impacted by cellphones. Try to consider both sides of the story. Seeing two sides of the story is also part of showing empathy.

B. Comic Strip

Now that you’ve thought about both sides of the story, it’s time to create a small piece of art. We’re going to write a comic strip to teach others about the impact of coltan mining on gorillas. It’s short—just one page. Creating your comic strip will help demonstrate to others what you have learned, and it will also serve as good practice for your final project.

You can design your comic strip any way you want, but an example is provided below to help get you started.

Directions: Use your “Two Sides of the Story” table to create a one-page comic strip. Your comic strip should help people see the impact their cellphones have on gorillas.
