2.2 Spotting Empathy

A. Thought Bubbles

Have you ever seen thought bubbles in a comic book or graphic novel? Thought bubbles are great because they tell us how a character feels or thinks. But in real life there are no thought bubbles.

Directions: Take a minute to think about this question:

  1. How can you understand others feelings if they don’t speak?

B. Empathy Charades

Now that you’ve had some practice spotting empathy, let’s try acting it out.

Directions: Let’s practice reading emotions:

  1. Find a partner or small group to work with.
  2. Sit in a circle with one computer open. You’ll use the computer to show the empathy emotions.
  3. One person at a time, click to the next slide and read the emotion.
  4. Act out the emotion. If someone guesses your emotion you get a point and they get a point. Whoever gets the most points wins.
  5. Take turns acting out until all the cards have been completed.

C. Reflect

Directions: In your Mission Log reflect on these three questions.

  1. How can understanding others emotions help you work together to solve a problem?
  2. How might empathy help you protect gorillas?Â
