What Kids Learn
Sugar is found in almost every food and drink people consume — but most people have no idea how much they are actually eating. In Sugar, Sugar Everywhere, students investigate the real story behind added sugar: where it comes from, why it ends up in so many foods, what it does inside the body, and how people can make healthier, more informed choices. Along the way, students learn how scientists study matter and changes by observing, measuring, and using evidence to explain what is happening. They explore how substances can change physically and chemically, and how these changes help us understand real-world problems like nutrition and health. Through this work, students build the scientific skills needed to ask questions, analyze information, and make evidence-based decisions.

Zolli Candy CEO, Alina Morse
In this module, students meet Alina Morse. She is the founder and CEO of Zolli Candy. Alina got the idea for Zolli Candy, a zero-sugar candy, when she was just 7 years old. Alina shares her experience as the CEO of Zolli Candy, explaining why she believes zero-sugar candy can make a difference in our health, and offers advice on how every young person can make a positive impact in the world.Â
Author, Caron Levis
In their Take Action Project, students meet author and children’s book writer Caron Levis. Caron will teach students about what it means to be an author, how to craft a powerful story by showing rather than telling, and selecting the right words to describe their story.Â

- 5-PS1-3. Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.
- 5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
- 5-PS3-1. Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, and motion and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.

Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI):
- PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter
- Matter of any type can be subdivided into particles that are too small to see, but even then the matter still exists and can be detected by other means. A model showing that gasses are made from matter particles that are too small to see and are moving freely around in space can explain many observations, including the inflation and shape of a balloon and the effects of air on larger particles or objects.
- The amount (weight) of matter is conserved when it changes form, even in transitions in which it seems to vanish.
- Measurements of a variety of properties can be used to identify materials. (Boundary: At this grade level, mass and weight are not distinguished, and no attempt is made to define the unseen particles or explain the atomic-scale mechanism of evaporation and condensation.)
- PS1.B: Chemical Reactions.
- No matter what reaction or change in properties occurs, the total weight of the substances does not change. (Boundary: Mass and weight are not distinguished at this grade level.)
- When two or more different substances are mixed, a new substance with different properties may be formed.

- The energy released [from] food was once energy from the sun that was captured by plants in the chemical process that forms plant matter (from air and water).
