B. Project Preview

Your Final Project: Create a Public Service Announcement.

Here’s a sample public service announcement or PSA about the rainforest. Your take action project is to create a PSA. You will be able to pick your rainforest topic and design what it will be about.

Watch this video. How did it make you feel? Was it a good or effective video? Why?

Mini-Projects

While you learn about the rainforest you’ll do four cool mini-projects. Some are games, some are fun poems. They are all things you can use in your final PSA. It’s up to you how you use them.

C. Gather Your Materials

Here’s a list of all the materials you’ll need for this project. You can gather all your materials now or find them as you go along. We’ll tell you what you need in your mission log:

  1. Glue
  2. Scissors
  3. Markers or something to write and color with
  4. Colored paper
  5. Index cards
  6. Clothes pins, paper clips or tape – something to hold things in place with
  7. Confetti or cut your own small pieces of paper
  8. Wooden dowels or sticks
  9. Craft supplies (googly eyes, pipe cleaners, other materials to make a puppet or costume with)

D. Brainstorm

Directions: Have you ever watched a video that made you want to take action? Have you seen a video that made you want to learn or dance or help someone? In this project you are going to make a video to inspire people to help the rainforest. Brainstorm some ideas now to get you thinking about your final project.

Use your Mission Log to brainstorm.

E. Gathering Your Evidence

In this module you will learn all about:

  • The two kinds of rainforests.
  • Adaptations that help plants and animals in the rainforest.
  • Causes of rainforest destruction.
  • Impact of rainforest destruction.
  • What can be done to help the rainforest.

You’ll play games, do experiments, watch videos, meet experts and read. Every time you learn something new, you should write down important information in your Mission Log. Write down anything you think will help you with your final project.

Write your notes in the “Fact Finder” section at the start of your Mission Log.
