3-6: Warmth from the Sun

A. Heat and Warmth

Not only does Earth’s closeness to the Sun provide energy for plants to grow and clean air for us to breathe, but it also provides us with warmth. Without the heat from the Sun, our water and land would be frozen solid. What other benefits do you think the Sun has on our Earth? Click on each icon below to learn more about the different benefits.

Kills Bacteria

Ever wonder why there are more people with the cold and flu in the winter? It's because sunlight, specifically UV rays, can kill bacteria and viruses.

Vitamin D

Sunlight is one of the best ways our bodies can produce vitamin D, which helps support better immune health, bone density, and tissue health.

Water Evaporation

The Sun's heat makes water turn into tiny water droplets that go up in the sky. These droplets become clouds, and when they come together, they can bring rain, which is important for our Earth.

B. Temperature Investigation

One thing we know for sure is that Earth is getting warmer. Is that because of our closeness to the Sun? Let’s investigate. Does the temperature change on Earth whether you are standing out in the sunlight or the shade? Let’s find out.

Directions: Turn to your Mission Log. Start by predicting whether the temperature will be the same in the sunlight and shade. Then conduct the investigation and analyze your results.
