2-1: What is Empathy?

A. How would you feel?

Change is hard, but the future will be different. Practicing empathy is one way we can deal with change together.

One of the future scenarios talks about moving to another planet. Let’s think about how you would feel about moving to a different planet.

  1. What do you think it would be like if you found out you were moving to another planet?
  2. What do you think you would see, hear, and do?
  3. What might you think and feel?

Directions: Open your Mission Log. Answer the questions to describe how you might feel about moving to another planet.

B. Self Awareness and Empathy

Sometimes we think that empathy is only about understanding what other’s think and feel.  However, knowing how you might respond and react to a situation can sometimes help you better understand how others might respond because you are starting from a place of awareness and feelings.

To fully practice empathy, it is good to be aware of what you might think and feel and how that may be similar or different to what others might feel. Listening and identifying what is similar or different about feelings is a key way to practice empathy.

D. Your Turn

One way to practice empathy is to ask questions. This helps us learn more information about how the other person might see things especially when how they are feeling might be different from how we might be feeling.

Directions: Let’s reflect together on how we can empathize with others. In your own words describe:

  1. What do you think it means to show empathy?
  2. How could you use empathy to help someone who is feeling worried or nervous about a big change like moving to Mars?
