Portfolio Evidence and the Student Success Framework

The artifacts you saw came from a project-based learning experience. In this case, they were from a Rock by Rock project.

You saw that the portfolio included several kinds of student work. This evidence can support reflection on many of our outcomes or serve as a foundation for conversation and reflection to inform others.

Revisiting the Student Success Framework

For Modules 4-7 we are going to look at the Rock by Rock Student Success Framework and at concrete examples of the evidence and tools we would use for each of these outcomes.

This should give you a concrete picture of how we developed our assessment plan so that you can develop your own. Feel free to use parts or all of our framework in developing your own.

Directions: As you review the Student Success Framework outcomes below, think about where you saw evidence of each one in Nicholas’ portfolio.

The Framework includes three focus areas that work together to support whole-child growth:

  • Strong Academics and Transferable Skills focus on the set of skills students need to grow intellectually and demonstrate deep understanding.
  • Life Habits include the personal habits and life skills that help students thrive now and in the future—like collaboration, perseverance, and initiative.
  • Purpose and Sense of Self represents the inner development that helps students understand their strengths, passions, and identity as learners.

Now that you’ve revisited Nicholas’ artifacts and considered how they align with the Student Success Framework, it’s time to take a closer look at each section of the framework and think about the evidence we collect and the  specific tools—like rubrics— we can use to help assess progress in each of the three focus areas. We’ll start with academic skills. In the next module, you’ll explore how Nicholas’ work was assessed using a student-friendly rubric and consider how a similar tool might support reflection, goal-setting, and meaningful feedback in your own school.
