Assessment Tool 3: Reflections

How the Reflection Was Used

In the portfolio, Nichollas used this reflection to share not only what he learned, but what the experience meant to him. He identified personal challenges, recognized moments where he used his strengths, and started making connections between the project and his future goals.

This kind of tool helps surface insights that often don’t appear in a traditional assessment—but are just as important.

Why Use Reflections?

Reflections like this help you go beyond the surface and understand what really matters to your students. They give you valuable insight into their mindset, motivations, and emerging sense of purpose.

Reflections are incredibly valuable for both you AND your students.

Apply It to Your School

Open your assessment planning template and revisit any outcomes related to purpose, self-awareness, or motivation. Use this section to update the last three columns:

  • What specific goals do you have for this outcome?
  • What evidence or data will help you understand student progress?
  • What tools—including this reflection—will you use to collect that data?

Reflections are incredibly valuable for both you AND your students.
