4.3 Strategy 2: Parts of a News Story

A. Strategy 2: Parts of a News Story

Watch this video to learn the three parts of a news story!

B. Story Structure

Ramy explained that news stories follow a structure.  Fiction books follow the structure of beginning, middle, end.  News stories follow a structure as well:

News Story Structure:

  • New – what they just found out about the topic
  • Now – what’s happening now and what people need to know
  • Next – what they think is going to happen next, what more people should know

C. Story Shuffle

Here is an example of a news story in the New, Now, Next structure – but it is out of order. The paragraphs are in the wrong places. 🙂

Directions:

You are editing a news story.  Put the pieces in the correct order so they have the best impact on the reader using the New, Now, Next structure.

D. Story Re-write

The news story above is now in the correct order, but it is a bit boring.

Directions: Reread the story and decide how you could make it better. Write your thoughts in your Mission Log.

  • Is each part strong enough?  What would make it better?
  • Is the topic clear?
  • Is it clear how people can help? Will they want to help?
