Project Title: Save Our Brains

Mission:

Who should decide when kids wear helmets?

Culminating / Take Action Project

Students choose from three persuasive projects: a pitch, a letter to a decision-maker, or a public service announcement.

What Kids Learn

Kids can experience brain injuries during sports and activities, but people do not always agree about when helmets should be required or who should make that decision. In Save Our Brains, students investigate the science and evidence behind helmet decisions. Across five modules, students uncover how brain injuries can affect the body, what makes some activities riskier than others, how helmets are designed to protect the brain, and what real-world evidence shows about helmet effectiveness. Students use what they discover to decide who should be responsible for making helmet decisions for kids.

Virtual Field Trips

One of our goals is to help kids connect what they are learning in our projects to the real world beyond the classroom. To do that, we’ve partnered with experts to help students learn from and virtually visit with experts from around the world. The Save Our Brains project partners with:

Dr. Nahdia Jones

Students meet neuroscientist Dr. Nahdia Jones from Columbia University in New York City. She teaches students what it’s like to be a neuroscientist and about key information about the brain.
