2.1 Being a learner

A. Being A Learner

Being a Learner: To accomplish a mission… you need to be a learner. Being a learner means we always try to learn new things so we can get better, grow our brains, and do more to help better our world. Now we’re going to learn more about how we can act as learners during our Save Our Brains project.

B. Learner and Growth Mindset

Being a Learner:  Being a learner is a mindset.

What is mindset? Glad you asked.

A mindset is how we think about things. It’s how we see the world. Some people think the world is fair. That’s mindset. Some people think the world is unfair. That’s a mindset. Learners have mindsets too. There are two kinds of learner mindset. Most people are a little bit of both.

Directions: Click on each of the mindsets to learn more about growth mindsets and fixed mindsets.

Growth Mindset

Growth mindset is...

when you think you can get better at something if you try.

Fixed Mindset

Fixed mindset is...

when we believe that our intelligence, creativity, and skills are things we are born with and that we can’t change them even if we try.

C. Which is which?

Directions: Listen to the four speakers below. Do you think they show a growth mindset or fixed mindset.  If they show a fixed mindset, what advice would you give them?

D. Think About It

Think about your own mindsets.

Most people do not have a fixed mindset for everything or a growth mindset for everything. They have a mix.

  1. Growth Mindset: Can you think of one thing where you have a growth mindset? For examples, something you keep trying at and you think you’ll get better at with practice.
  2. Fixed Mindset: Can you think of one thing where you might have a fixed mindset? This might be something you think you are just not good at. This could also be something you think you are good at, but if things get hard you get frustrated.
