Love Writing Through Debate
Are you looking for ways to get your kids to love writing?
Try holding a debate.
Each Rock by Rock project for grades 3-5 includes a debate where students grapple with complex and engaging issues.
Select Better Evidence
Debate is a great way for kids to identify evidence and explore arguments they can use in their persuasive writing assignments.
Hold a debate before kids start writing and they can use their ideas from the debate to inform their written piece.
Debates can be short and based on one text or longer and draw on multiple texts (text, video, artifacts) from a recent unit.
Sample Rock by Rock Debates Include
- Who is responsible for protecting endangered elephants?
- Are video games good for us or bad for us?
- Is it right to kill one species in an ecosystem to save another?
- Should we ban all single use plastic or let people make their own choices?
- Should we eat bugs for lunch to help th environment?
What Our Teachers Say
Ebony, one of our third grade teachers, found that her kids loved debate.
“I hadn’t done debate in science before, but then we did the debate about the rainforest and now we do debate in science all the time. My kids love it!”
Here’s a simple template you can use to help your kids organize their thoughts before a debate.
