A.2 Strategy 1: Hooking your Listener Demo

A. Strategy 1: The Hook

B. Types of Podcasts

There are lots of kinds of podcasts. Some of the tell a story, some of them have one speaker, some of them have many. Here are two common kinds of podcasts. Click each one to learn more.

You Try: Which format narrative or interview would you use for each of these podcasts? Why?

Telling a story about a time they

were making a smoothie

and it exploded all over the kitchen.

A local chef will share

easy recipes to help

others learn to cook.

C. Hooking Your listener

It doesn’t matter what type of podcast you use, all podcasts have a strong hook. Podcasters use a strong opening to “hook” their listener. Podcasters try to hook their listeners just like authors write a strong opening to hook their readers. A hook gives the listener a hint about what the podcast is going to be about.

Maurice told us that your hook should have:

  1. Name: Have the name of the podcast – and try to repeat it!
  2. Sounds; Theme song or music.
  3. Guest Intro: If you have a guest on your podcast, give their name and a short bio.

Directions: Here are two podcasts from NASA. Listen to the hooks. As you listen, think about;

1. Did these hooks make you want to keep listening? Why?

2. Where were these hooks strong?

3. How would you improve these hooks?

Rocket Ranch: Episode 29

NASA Explorers: Apollo

C. You try: Get them hooked

In your mission log, rewrite some podcast hooks.  It is your job to take a boring hook and make it more engaging for the listener so that they will continue to listen to your podcast.
